The riddle: 2012

Wise men save near a tree by a river there's a hole in the ground
Where an old man of Aran goes around and around and his mind is a beacon
In the veil of the night for a strange kind of fashion there's a wrong and a right

I got plans for us nights in the scullery and days instead of me
I only know what to discuss of for anything but light
Wise men fighting over you

I got time to kill sly looks in corridors without a plan of yours
A blackbird sings on bluebird hill thanks to the calling of the wild wise mens child.

This Child (the play)

Spawned from a verbatim project on a housing estate in France, Joel Pommerat's play lifts the lid off parent-child relationships and gives voice to feelings that often go unspoken. It takes the form of 10 unrelated scenes that chart the relationship between parents and children from different perspectives.

This Child is one of the most talked-about plays in France in recent years. It is an exploration of the feelings, from the noblest to the most shameful, that bind parents and children together. The play, remarkable in its intensity, stages various family confrontations that show all the complexity of the family bond, in clear and transparent language. Each of the ten scenes is like a short play in itself and they can be viewed in any order.

This child will give me strength
I’m going to show them just who I am
I’m going to show them that I’m not who they think I am

Color blindness

Color blindness or color vision deficiency is the inability or decreased ability to see color, or perceive color differences, under lighting conditions when color vision is not normally impaired.

"Color blind" is a term of art; there is no actual blindness but there is a fault in the development of either or both sets of retinal cones that perceive color in light and transmit that information to the optic nerve.

Color blindness is a sex-linked condition; the genes that produce photopigments are carried on the X chromosome; if some of these genes are missing or damaged, color blindness will be expressed in males with a higher probability than in females because males only have one X chromosome. [ more ]

Known, Unknown, Anonymous and On Death Row

Qbox gallery is pleased to present a group exhibition under the title Known, Unknown, Anonymous and On Death Row.

The show combines artists who have been widely recognized and engaged in the art scene with artists who have not yet been known or they will never be as they were not part of the art market.

Despite the nature of the art-piece a name carries all sorts of information and holds a dynamic by-itself, which is something that artists like Marcel Duchamp (pseudonym Rrose Selavy 1921), Andy Warhol and Robert Rauschenberg (Erased de Kooning, 1953) have dealt with different ways in the past.

Moreover, human portraits are depicted through the medium of painting and photography, which stands as a common thread between the artists. Among the known and unknown artists in the exhibition are: Ellie Coates, Sileia Daskopoulou, David Gates, Takehito Koganezawa, Martin Maloney, Apostolos Michailides, David Mathis, Adrian Piper, Ugo Rondinone, Malick Sidibé, Tabakopoulos and Foundoulis, Rosemarie Trockel, Karen Yasinski. A number of works by anonymous artists are also included in the show.

Duration: 8 November ‘11 - 14 January ’12

Few meters away from the mood

Batagianni gallery recently presented Arslan Sukan's photography exhibition, entitled "Few meters away from the mood". It was artist's first solo show in Greece.

Arslan Sukan's works balance between reality and its transformation. The human need to escape, to reshape what one perceives as reality, becomes the key element in the body of his work. In the current series, the artist isolates mainly architectural elements which he presents as symbols for the same inherent human need.

Sukan's photographs prove to be a constant play of dimensions, perspective and light; a new understanding of reality. Curated by Eleftheria Tseliou

What's this again?

What's this? What's this?
There's color everywhere
What's this?
There's white things in the air
What's this?
I can't believe my eyes
I must be dreaming
Wake up, jack, this isn't fair
What's this?

What's this? What's this?
There's something very wrong
What's this?
There are people singing songs

What's this?
The streets are lined with
Little creatures laughing
Everybody seems so happy
Have I possibly gone daffy?
What is this?

There are children throwing snowballs here
instead of throwing heads
They're busy building toys
And absolutely no one's dead

There's frost on every window
Oh, I can't believe my eyes
And in my bones I feel the warmth
That's coming from inside

Oh, look
What's this?
They're hanging mistletoe, they kiss
Why that looks so unique, inspired
They're gathering around to hear a story
Roasting chestnuts on a fire
What's this?

In here they've got a little tree, how queer
And who would ever think
And why?

They're covering it with tiny little things
They've got electric lights on strings
And there's a smile on everyone
So, now, correct me if I'm wrong
This looks like fun
This looks like fun
Oh, could it be I got my wish?
What's this?

Oh my, what now?
The children are asleep
But look, there's nothing underneath
No ghouls, no witches here to scream and scare them
Or ensnare them, only little cozy things
Secure inside their dreamland
What's this?

The monsters are all missing
And the nightmares can't be found
And in their place there seems to be
Good feeling all around

Instead of screams, I swear
I can hear music in the air
The smell of cakes and pies
Is absolutely everywhere

The sights, the sounds
They're everywhere and all around
I've never felt so good before
This empty place inside of me is filling up
I simply cannot get enough

I want it, oh, I want it
Oh, I want it for my own
I've got to know
What is this place that I have found?
What is this?
Christmas Town, hmm...

Correspondences

Nature is a temple where living pillars
Let sometimes emerge confused words;

Man crosses it through forests of symbols
Which watch him with intimate eyes.

Like those deep echoes that meet from afar
In a dark and profound harmony,
As vast as night and clarity,

So perfumes, colors, tones answer each other.
There are perfumes fresh as children's flesh,
Soft as oboes, green as meadows,
And others, corrupted, rich, triumphant,

Possessing the diffusion of infinite things,
Like amber, musk, incense and aromatic resin,
Chanting the ecstasies of spirit and senses.

Scenic World

The lights go on
The lights go off
When things don't feel right
I lie down like a tired dog
licking his wounds in the shade

When I feel alive
I try to immagine a careless life
A scenic world where the sunsets are all
Breathtaking

The Beast

The morning that I was born again
I was made into a beast

Am I free now, am I at peace?
Is that the ground below me, or your feet?

The morning I saw your face again
I was made into a beast
Am I free now, am I at peace?

Is that the ground below me, or your feet?
And I'll break my head over you
I swear

I can't see nobody

I walk the lonely streets; I watch the people passing by.
I used to smile and say hello. Guess I was just a happy guy.
Then you happened, girl, this feeling that posessses me.
I just can't move myself. I guess it all just had to be.

I can't see nobody...no, I can't see nobody.
Mine eyes can only look at you...

I used to have a brain; I used to think of many things.
I watched the falling rain and listened to the sweet birds sing.
Don't ask me why,
You are my nights;

And now as I try to forget you...
It doesn't work out any way.
And I don't know why...

Ordinary life

See, the stars are shimmering tonight
been no observer but an earthly delight
stress that out, but I see no light
be the guest in my ordinary life

You'll find me in no places where spirit fills the air
meet me in my office, on the streets, or in my car
no room for you to breathe like a twenty year's wife
be a guest in my ordinary life

Meet me out in a dark and dense wood
an invitation to reguide my childhood
you know better what is wrong and what is right
be the host in my ordinary life

Across The Wire

Well it was a maze run but for now just close your eyes love
spend all your life in the sun now you look for somewhere shaded

Whatever brings you round
don't ever lay down
under the grey skies
don't ever lay down
under the grey skies
so long

Across the wire it comes but it's nobody that you know
skipping along to somewhere to only let them punch out your lights again

Whatever brings you round
don't ever lay down
under the grey skies
