Lend me a hand

"Anyone who cannot come to terms with his life while he is alive needs one hand to ward off a little his despair over his fate... but with his other hand he can note down what he sees among the ruins."
--Franz Kafka

"The last time I saw him he was walking down lover's lane holding his own hand." --Fred Allen

"This is what is hardest: to close the open hand because one loves." --Friedrich Nietzsche

"People who bite the hand that feeds them usually lick the boot that kicks them."  --Eric Hoffer

"It's the niceties that make the difference fate gives us the hand, and we play the cards." --Arthur Schopenhauer

fig. (i)

fig. (i)
David Gates

Duration: February 9 – March 30, 2013

Qbox gallery is pleased to present David Gates’ (b. 1979) first solo exhibition in Greece, entitled fig. (i). The title of the show relates to the systems of referral between the images and the descriptions used in the scientific manuals and old natural history books, which are often used as the starting point and source of much of the work. These outdated sources of information, sometimes modified sometimes not highlight an interest in their obsession with order and totality and the impossibility of rationalising the objective world around us.

David Gates works with pinhole photography, found images and objects. Pinhole images, far from being nostalgic, authenticate the present, making it vibrant and shimmering by pushing the not too distant past away, opening up the future to the possibility of possibilities.

Being a resident artist during a month on the island of Kea, Greece, Gates used a small van as a travelling darkroom, peering over fences, dodging shadows and scouring the roadsides. Finding usefulness in the neglected, the everyday and overlooked. Paying attention to the edges and in some cases eliminating the focus of a photograph in a book page, photographing overgrown trees which have long outlived their original plan or usefulness, or flattening a feather, removing its featheriness whilst allowing it to cling on to its undeniable objectness. These things seem to stand in for the objects or ideas that they actually are.

The artist does not look for certain results to prove a theory and to make a virtue of trial and error, instead he plays at the border between the visible and invisible, somewhere in between things and meanings, between representations and actual things. He poses questions as an activity, uses method as a meaning and tries to open up a space for looking or relooking by removing images and things from the flow of time towards their inevitable disappearance.

Romance

Certain, certain place and time,
somehow locked up in your mind
romance, living upon dream
future see it on a screen

Babe, where'd you hide my toys,
slow dance, reaching for your thighs
somehow, locked up in your car
where sky gives a night above

Romance living upon dream
future see it on a screen

Bloated Faces

Bloated Faces and Pop-up
Xavier Noiret-Thomé

AD Gallery presented the solo show of the French artist Xavier Noiret-Thomé entitled BLOATED FACES & POP-UP.

As Pascal argues “to mock philosophy is truly to philosophise”. The same stands for painting; someone who can mock painting can also truly paint. The viewer of Xavier Noiret-Thomé’s works is confronted by the ease with which the gaze can mock what is to be seen. What characterizes a successful painting eventually; a dice throw or the flash of inspiration?

Xavier Noiret-Thomé, accepts the Pascalian experiment by seeking his art’s balance between nothingness and infinity. His admiration and devotion to the work of Leroy, Richter, Dieter Roth, Adrian Schiess, Francis Picabia helped him approach the real wager of painting. A kind of painting that caresses the gaze and attacks it at the same time. [ more ]

The Truth

Silver killers rain from above
Come to waste the land and kill your love
Get to know about the truth
Say goodbye the future has no you

Wasted people in a wasted world
An empty promise and a flower girl
Didn’t know about the truth
Didn’t know how it could get to you

Life is nothing new, your love of God won’t help you
Kiss the kids and pray the whole night through
Slide into the dark, it's taking shape around you
Pretty soon it's all that you will know

Animal Mentality

It's only being given time to think that creates boredom
I could be better off some other way
Don't give the opportunity to think to me, it's not worthwhile
Just take that opportunity away
Just give me things to do, nothing to think about or look at

I'll work until my body breaks
I'll live a life as long as or as short as you'll require me too
A life as long as those things take to do
Just, just give me animal mentality, just give me animal's mentality
Then I'll get by, ok?
ok??

I don't know why you educated me, i knew you hated me
It's only sadism - your favourite game
Teach people vaguely how to walk, then chop their legs away,
Then laugh at them becase they're lame

It's only being given time to think that creates boredom
I think about it and decide that i am free
But freedom's just like boredom - nothing worthwhile to fight for

Then just give me animal mentality
Then i'll get by
just give me animal mentality, just give me animal's mentality
Then we'll all get by, ok?
ok.

Animal mentality.

Jewish Museum Berlin

The Jewish Museum Berlin opened in September 2001. Two years earlier, the empty new building by architect Daniel Libeskind was an unexpected visitor attraction. The Old Building – the baroque Collegienhaus, the postmodern Libeskind Building and the new Glass Courtyard erected in 2007.

The historical permanent exhibition chooses an unusual perspective on the history of Germany and German-speaking territories. Two Millennia of German Jewish History lets the visitor see Germany of the past and present through the eyes of the Jewish minority.
